ABSTRACT
Field of Vision: New York Field of Vision was launched in New York in September 2004 with the first of this series of international events. Bridging live art and internet based formats, the innovative structure of the project creates an interface between the synthetic digital world of virtual reality and the physical world we inhabit. The live component of this dual combination consists of large format billboard displays at significant geographic locations. The locations’ cultural, aesthetic and sociological context determines the subject of the projection of multiple views on to the respective field. The virtual component uses the internet as a permanent base for the field’s continually expanding content. Each field is developed in response to location and context in cooperation with a contributing group and organizing artists from Digital Art Project\'s network. Creative input is through a participatory process adapted to each specific location. The Field of Vision concept of attempting to create a single, unifying structure out of a multitude of different and diverse perceptions totally contradicts the traditional convocation of the individual artist as the sole and exclusive communicator of our vision. Instead Field of Vision assumes the role of an editing board working in a seemingly chaotic field of diverse religious, scientific, political and artistic views which again are constantly subject to change of geographical, cultural and sociological angle and perspective. Field of Vision: New York was organised by Digital Art Projects through a call for submissions over the internet and produced on location at The Lab Gallery, New York in September 2004. 230 artists sent in 960 images from across the globe. Translated into Chinese, Spanish and German, the web site attracted submissions from 23 countries. Building the field from collaged material sent in by one group of artists and edited by the organizing artists involved deconstructing and refiguring narratives and mediating between cultural and media conventions. In this event there was no pre-conceived outcome. The structure of the project is a vital means of exploring the spaces we inhabit and making sense of our present time and the multiplicity of our perceptions - our collective field of vision.
